Think small enough to actually happen
A carefully planned weekend can be lovely, but it is not the only way to connect. A ten-minute walk or a cup of tea together may fit a busy week more easily.
Ask before planning
Something that sounds relaxing to you might not feel the same to your partner. Try asking: “Would you rather go for a short walk or stay in and make something together?” A choice gives both of you room.
Put away one distraction
You do not need a perfectly phone-free life. You could agree to set your phones aside for the first few minutes of a meal. Keep the agreement mutual, specific, and easy to revisit.
Ask a question that has room in it
“What has been taking up space in your mind lately?” can open a different conversation from “How was work?” Listen without immediately solving, and share something of your own too.
Notice what works for you
Connection is not a competition with another couple’s routine. Notice the moments in which you both feel a little more present, and look for a way to make room for another one.
